50s Housewive Fan Club for Howard
Hi all,
How lovely to be able to do this, Viva la net!
If you hadn't heard already a Melbourne group called the Lioness Forum, has initiated an action whereby women dress up in 50s housewife clothes and stand next to, or blow kisses (whatever) to John Howard. The idea is being well accepted generally with the groups I have touched base with and who knows might just start something. One of the problems is that, apparently, it is hard to know just where John Howard will turn up on any one day - so can be hard to organise. I noticed last night an anti war protester behind Howard - so it could also look increasingly bazaar with a varied group of dressed up geeks. This kind of thing will definitely have to be ironed out on the run - but well - Howard leads a team - why not stand next to any of the Liberals? Or if a group of women want to haunt the streets in this 50s garb could eventually catch someone's attention.
I have my outfit ready, in Canberra, and am willing to join with others here sometime until 23rd September and then up in Ballina up until the 7th October.
I grew up in the 50s, so when I put on the things yesterday I must say the experience was frought with mixed feelings. Some excitement and fun, in simply dressing up, but then the associations with the dress etc. was scary, very confronting. Definitately don't want to go back to these days!! You never know the scene of multiple women (as it was then of course) in these clothes could even shock Howard himself! We have moved on and there is no way we are going back!
What do you think?
cheers, Joannie
PS: I am a member of another Melbourne based group called Mothers of Intervention - a site will be popping up soon at www.moi.org.au or another terrific Australian women's site is at
